Etiquette is less important today than it used to be, however many of the “rules” of etiquette were originally established to make sure that the Wedding Day went smoothly.

The duties of the Mother of the Groom on the actual wedding day will vary according to how formal the wedding is and whether it is a church or civil wedding,

However the following three guidelines will go a long way to making the both the Mother of the Bride and the Mother of the Groom as stress free as possible.

Traditionally the first responsibility of the Mother of the Groom is to contact the Bride’s parents and introduce yourself. The two families will be involved in the Wedding to a greater or lesser extent, so the sooner that you get to know each other the better.

Of course there are many different scenarios; the families may already know each other, you may live close to each other or you may be total strangers and live many miles apart. The initial contact will probably be by telephone to say how happy you are about the Wedding. Depending on circumstances, the next step may be an invite to your house, going out for a meal or, if distance is a problem, writing a letter and maybe sending a photograph of your son when he was a child. Email and text are obviously very convenient; however they may not be appropriate to the situation.

The second most important responsibility is to provide the Bride’s parents with a list of guests including addresses. This list needs to stick to the number of guests that has been decided, and needs to be provided by the date requested so that invitations can be sent out in time to give guests plenty of notice.

The third responsibility for the Mother of the Groom is to liaise with the Mother of the Bride regarding her outfit for the Special Occasion. Traditionally the Mother of The Bride will choose her outfit first, and The Mother of the Groom will choose an outfit of a complimentary colour and style and of a similar length. Although this rule is less strictly observed than it used to be, you need to bear in mind how the wedding photographs will look if the Groom’s and Bride’s mothers outfits clash.

These simple guidelines will help to ensure that both The Mother of the Groom and the Mother of the Bride have as little stress as possible during the preparations for the Wedding and on the Day itself.

1. Don’t leave it till the last minute.

Start looking for your Prom Dress a couple of months before your Prom. Don’t leave it until the week before – your choice will be limited and if the shop needs to order your dress, they might not have enough time to get it delivered.

2. Remember the small shops!

Most smaller shops really do offer the most amazing selection of fabulous prom dresses.  A small, independent retailer is where you are most likely to find that really special dress. A Bridal Shop may seem an unlikely place to look for a Prom Dress but when you realise that many of the companies that make Bridesmaid’s Dresses also make Prom Dresses, it makes sense.  The worst thing that can happen at a prom is that someone else turns up in the same dress!  But how will you know whether someone else has chosen the same dress as you?  Here at Captivating Brides and Special Occasions we always ask which prom our customers are attending, and we will never sell the same dress to two people going to the same Prom.

3. Have an open mind.

It can help to have an idea of just what kind of Prom Dress you are looking for, but try not to get a really fixed image in your head.  You can experiment with different colours, styles and “looks” in the shop and you may find that a style that you would never have chosen from a photo in magazine is perfect when you try it on.

4. Take someone with you, to help you choose.

You really do need someone to give you a second opinion but be careful who you take.  It must be someone whose opinion you value, and above all, whose opinion you can trust!  Remember that friends could be in competition!  The best person to take would usually be Mum, Dad, older sister etc – they will normally have your best interests at heart. And don’t forget to ask the advice of the person serving you.  They will have a wealth of experience and be able to suggest colours and styles that you may never have considered.

5. The most important thing is to have fun looking for your dress!
